French Embassy Condemns Military Junta’s Decision to Detain Activists

June 4, 2022.

The French Embassy in Yangon has vehemently condemned the military junta’s decision to detain four individuals, including renowned author Ko Jin Mi and former People’s Assembly representative Phyo Zeya Thaw. This statement comes in response to the junta’s declaration that the detention is a measure to suppress those who defend freedom. The embassy described the decision as brutal and a serious breach of the ongoing moratorium on capital punishment that has been in place since the military coup on February 1, 2021, during which 113 executions were carried out. The French government reiterated its continuous opposition to the death penalty globally and expressed respect and support for the people of Myanmar facing the illegal military regime.
