ASEAN Leaders Announce Timeline for Implementing Five-Point Consensus to Resolve Myanmar’s Situation

November 11, 2022

ASEAN leaders have announced that the five-point consensus aimed at resolving Myanmar’s issues will be implemented within a specified timeline, and that they will soon engage with all relevant stakeholders across various sectors. This was decided at a meeting held today.

ASEAN emphasized its commitment to addressing Myanmar’s crisis, stating that while there is a timeline for implementing the five-point consensus, foreign ministers of ASEAN will continue to work towards its execution as mandated by the leaders’ summit.

Furthermore, ASEAN is set to meet with all relevant parties soon to facilitate the implementation of the five-point consensus, and it has been reported that the special envoy will start discussions without any prior stipulations or conditions.

It has been reiterated that the Myanmar military council will not be allowed to attend ASEAN leaders’ meetings or foreign ministers’ meetings. If necessary, the ASEAN coordination committee will assess and decide whether or not to allow the Myanmar military to attend other ASEAN meetings.

Should the five-point consensus not be implemented within the designated timeline, the leaders’ summit will make a final decision. ASEAN has called for a reduction of tensions and violence in Myanmar, stating that the military is the most powerful organization in the country.

ASEAN has called on the United Nations and the international community to support its efforts in implementing the five-point consensus. The decisions made in this regard will be reviewed in future ASEAN meetings to ensure accountability and progress.
