Myanmar ethnic groups residing in the United Kingdom held protests on November 9 outside the Chinese Embassy in London and the Chinese Consulate in Manchester, calling on the Chinese government to refrain from interfering in Myanmar’s internal affairs, according to participants in the demonstrations.

The protesters voiced their opposition to China’s support for the Myanmar military junta’s planned elections, its pressure on ethnic revolutionary groups to cease hostilities, and its recent invitation for junta leader Min Aung Hlaing to meet with Chinese officials in Kunming. The demonstrators demanded that the Chinese government respect the will of the Myanmar people, end its interference, and recognize that the future of Myanmar should be determined solely by its citizens.

In addition, the protesters presented an open letter calling for the immediate release of President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, an end to political recognition of the military regime, a halt to arms and aviation fuel sales to the junta responsible for violent attacks on civilians, and increased collaboration with the National Unity Government (NUG) and Ethnic Revolutionary Organizations (EROs). The letter, signed by multiple individuals, was submitted to the embassy during the protest.
