Oxford St. Huge Headmistress Calls for Release of Aung San Suu Kyi

January 1, 2025. The headmistress of St. Hugh’s College at Oxford University, Lady Elish Angiolini, has written a letter to Myanmar’s military junta calling for the release of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been detained by the regime. Lady Angiolini, who had taught Aung San Suu Kyi during her time at Oxford, expressed her concerns over the prolonged detention of the former leader. The request has gained support from three former British foreign secretaries: William Hague, Sir Malcolm Rifkind, and Jack Straw, who have all urged for her release. They emphasized that Aung San Suu Kyi is a suitable leader for Myanmar, advocating for a democratic path to governance. The call for her release was highlighted in a report by The Independent on January 1, 2025, further strengthening international pressure on Myanmar’s military government to reconsider its stance on the political figure.
