A Myanmar parliamentary delegation attended the Parliamentary Hearing held at the United Nations headquarters, according to a press release from the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH).
The hearing, titled “Accelerating the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals: Finance, Institutions, and Politics,” was held in New York, USA, from February 13 to February 14. The Myanmar delegation, led by CRPH Chairman U Aung Kyi Nyunt, participated in the event.
During the hearing, the Myanmar delegation discussed “the stagnation of Myanmar’s development following the military coup, the efforts by the National Unity Government (NUG) and the Hluttaw to overcome these challenges, and the need for international support to continue development projects in territories controlled by the NUG and ethnic revolutionary organizations.”
The delegation also held separate meetings with permanent representatives of Canada and Malaysia to discuss the situation in Myanmar. Reports indicate that the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has recognized the CRPH as an official partner since 2021, following the military’s unlawful seizure of power. Myanmar’s parliamentary representatives have continued to fulfill their responsibilities, maintaining Myanmar’s membership in the IPU.
The hearing reaffirmed this recognition, allowing Myanmar’s parliamentary representatives to participate in IPU conferences and meetings. These platforms have been used to raise awareness about the situation in Myanmar, the military’s violence, the efforts of revolutionary organizations, and the hardships and needs of displaced civilians worldwide.
Additionally, the delegation emphasized the importance of international collaboration to dismantle the illegitimate military regime in Myanmar and build a new federal democratic state. They urged support for revolutionary forces and their ongoing efforts to achieve these goals.
The Myanmar delegation included NUG Minister Dr. Win Myat Aye and MP Daw Myat Thida Tun (Chair of the International Relations Committee), alongside CRPH Chairman U Aung Kyi Nyunt, according to reports.
