Myanmar Workers in Thailand to Protest Min Aung Hlaing’s Presence at BIMSTEC Summit on April 4

April 4, 2025

In Thailand, Myanmar workers are being urged to join a protest against military junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, who has arrived in the country to attend the BIMSTEC summit. On April 4, 2025, Myanmar workers in Thailand will be encouraged not to work and to wear black clothing as a symbol of opposition to the junta, according to a statement from Myanmar’s Spring Revolution People’s Strike Forces issued late on the evening of April 3.

The protest is set to coincide with Min Aung Hlaing’s attendance at the BIMSTEC summit. The call to action urges Myanmar nationals and international supporters living in Thailand to wear black attire to show solidarity with the Myanmar people and to oppose the military junta, which has been responsible for widespread violence against civilians in Myanmar, including mass killings, airstrikes, and destruction during natural disasters.

Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Thailand on April 3, 2025, to attend the BIMSTEC summit. He is facing accusations of genocide from the International Court of Justice for his role in the Rohingya genocide. Additionally, his military junta has been responsible for the deaths of thousands of civilians, including ongoing executions of civilians, air raids, and violent crackdowns in the wake of the February 2021 coup.

The Spring Revolution People’s Strike Forces condemned the participation of Min Aung Hlaing in the summit, calling it a disregard for the suffering of Myanmar’s people. They have called on relevant authorities at the BIMSTEC summit to take action in response to this serious violation of human rights and to prevent the junta leader from receiving a platform to further his regime’s narrative.
