The junta military used internationally banned cluster bombs in an airstrike that killed five civilians — including three primary school children — at a home-based school in Pain Yat Village, Kyainseikgyi Township, Karen State, according to the Karen National Union (KNU), Dooplaya District.
The attack took place at 1:45 p.m. on June 9, when junta fighter jets dropped bombs on Pain Yat Village. Among the dead were two girls aged six and eight, a seven-year-old boy, a 40-year-old female teacher, and a 65-year-old male villager. Another 22 people, including 18 schoolchildren, were injured. The bombing also damaged 10 homes and one monastery building in the village.
The children killed and injured were Grade 1 and Grade 2 primary students, sources confirmed.
The KNU reported that the attack was carried out by junta aircraft from the Naypyitaw Air Force Command, and that the bombs used were cluster munitions, which are banned under international law due to their indiscriminate impact and long-term danger to civilians.
