Renowned Artist Phyo Thakhyaw Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison for Supporting CDM

July 2, 2022

Renowned singer Phyo Thakhyaw has been sentenced to three years in prison by the junta for allegedly supporting the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), according to a statement from a friend of the artist.

Phyo Thakhyaw was arrested by the military in March 2022 and sentenced in June by the Insein Court under Section 50 of the Anti-Terrorism Law. “He has received a three-year sentence. The ruling was made by the Insein Court under the anti-terrorism law. He was arrested while allegedly supporting CDM activities at his home in Hlaingthaya and Nawaddy Housing,” his friend stated to the Yangon Modern News Agency.

Reports indicate that the junta’s lobbyist, Han Nyin Oo, incited his arrest via Telegram, highlighting the regime’s crackdown on artists and activists associated with the CDM.
