In a significant move to financially sanction the Myanmar military’s revenue source, the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE), 509 domestic and international organizations submitted a letter to U.S. President Biden and his administration today, accompanied by 265,000 signatures from the public.
The letter urges the U.S. government to impose sanctions on MOGE, which acts as a vital financial conduit for the military junta accused of committing genocide. The letter emphasizes that funds flowing through MOGE are being funneled into the military’s operations against the populace, and calls for immediate action to block these financial channels.
Furthermore, the signatories highlighted that the military junta utilizes U.S. banking systems to access resources that contribute to the ongoing violence against civilians, thereby requesting urgent intervention to halt these transactions.
The correspondence to the U.S. President and his administration included signatures from various international civil society organizations, student groups, labor unions, and 265,000 citizens from Myanmar.
