British Parliament Displays Image of U Jimmy as Democracy Hero at Marble Arch, International Community Criticized for Myanmar’s Human Rights Violations

The image of U Jimmy, a prominent student leader of the 88 Generation, is displayed at Marble Arch in London as part of a tribute to mark International Human Rights Day on December 10, according to a statement from the Myanmar Accountability Project (MAP). Chris Gunness, director of MAP, stated that the image serves as a reminder for the British government and others to transfer Myanmar’s case to the International Criminal Court (ICC). “It is imperative that the case be expedited for transfer to the ICC. People in Myanmar are facing daily bombardments and violations. We urge that the international community act with the same urgency for the people of Myanmar as they do for those in Ukraine,” Gunness added. MAP has also illuminated U Jimmy’s image in the British Parliament, using a collage of photographs of political prisoners to portray U Jimmy. The artwork was created by Portuguese artist Paulo Andringa. Additionally, Tom Andrews, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Myanmar, criticized the international community for its inaction regarding the situation in Myanmar. “The machinery of international justice has not been effective for the people of Myanmar. In contrast, the UN Security Council held emergency meetings within days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, while the people of Myanmar have been waiting for over 18 months for any meaningful action. Although there was a special emergency session later, the people of Myanmar are still waiting for justice,” Andrews stated.
