Military Executes 17 in Alehlyo Village, Sets Corpses Ablaze; 2 in Mattara and Powar Villages Also Killed

December 31, 2022. In Kin U Township, Sagaing Region, an armed military unit reportedly executed 17 villagers in Alehlyo village over a three-day period, according to local residents. Beginning on December 28, the military had been stationed in Alehlyo village, accusing villagers of supporting resistance efforts, leading to the shooting of 17 individuals and the incineration of their bodies. “We have confirmed that around 17 villagers have been killed by the military in Alehlyo village. Corpses are left behind near the village school. There were clashes last night, but we do not yet know the extent of the casualties. A woman named Ma Chaw Po was shot in the village farmland. The bodies have not been collected yet. We hear the military is still stationed in the school,” a local resident stated. On the morning of December 30, two siblings from Alehlyo village were reportedly shot dead by the military, which accused them of supporting the People’s Defense Forces (PDF). Within the three days of military presence, 16 civilians have been executed, allegedly for supporting the resistance. It was also reported that on December 30 at approximately 5 PM, bodies were being collected and burned. Additionally, around 8:30 AM on December 30, military personnel stationed in the village fired upon a gathering of displaced persons living in the southern part of the village, injuring one elder and three displaced individuals.
