Myanmar Military Burns Down Villages of Mato and Laekpan, Monastery Set Ablaze

In Min Kin Township, Sagaing Region, the Myanmar military has set fire to the villages of Mato and Laekpan, burning down homes and even a monastery, according to local residents. On the morning of January 1, around 10 a.m., the military troops entered the villages and began torching civilian homes. Residents reported that not only were homes destroyed, but the local monastery was also not spared from the flames.

“This morning, at 10 a.m., the military started setting fires in Laekpan village. By noon, they reached Mato village and continued burning. Even the monastery was set on fire. Villagers haven’t been able to re-enter the village as soldiers are still inside. The extent of the damage is not yet clear,” said a resident from Mato village.
