January 9, 2023

The Myanmar military has reportedly burned down Pan Nyo village in Myawaddy Township, according to information received from the local People’s Defense and Security Forces. The incident occurred on January 9 at approximately 3:20 p.m., when the military, described as aggressive, entered the village and set it ablaze.

It was reported that the military had entered Pan Nyo village from the Ayeyarwady River on January 7, looting public property and subsequently burning down the village. As of now, it is unclear how many homes have been lost due to the fire, and there is no confirmation on whether local residents have sustained injuries.

Witnesses noted that the military looted public property, organizing items under their own names for transport towards the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwady River. Local defense forces managed to engage the military during this looting, successfully reclaiming some of the stolen goods. Notably, this is not the first time Pan Nyo village has been targeted; the military previously burned the village on May 18, 2022, destroying 14 homes.
