A coalition of 61 groups has requested the European Union and European nations to take a leading role in prosecuting the Myanmar military for war crimes and crimes against humanity at the ICC and ICJ. This call was made known after the coalition sent an open letter on February 1, highlighting the grave human rights issues arising from the actions of the Myanmar military junta.
Comprising members of the Myanmar diaspora in Europe, the coalition urged the EU and its member states to respond collectively to the humanitarian crises inflicted by the military regime, which they describe as one of the worst in the world. The groups called for immediate action against the Myanmar military and emphasized the need for solidarity in addressing the human rights violations occurring in Myanmar.
The letter was addressed to four key leaders of the European Union: Mr. Charles Michel, Dr. Ursula Von der Leyen, Mr. Josep Borrell Fontelles, and Ms. Roberta Metsola, and was also distributed to relevant European nations.
