The National Monk Leader and abbot of the Win Ni Mya Tar Monastery in Bago Region, Bhaddanta Munindara Bhivamsa, has reportedly passed away after his vehicle was shot at by military forces while returning from Mandalay on June 19. Close associates of the monk have confirmed that he succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack.
It is known that the monk was arriving at the Mandalay Airport when the airport security forces fired upon the vehicle he was in. “We heard that the airport security guard shot at them. The attack happened right at the airport exit gate. The monk passed away at the scene today,” said one of the monk’s close aides.
Currently, responsible monks and laypeople from the Win Ni Mya Tar Monastery in Bago are reported to be on their way to retrieve the monk’s remains.
