UN Conference: Ambassador Kyaw Mo Tun Calls for Halt to Transfer of Aviation Fuel and Military Supplies to Myanmar Military

October 1, 2024

During the high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on the occasion of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun, called for all member countries not to transfer aircraft fuel, ammunition, and related supplies to the Myanmar military. This statement was made during the high-level meeting held on September 26 at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Since the illegal military coup in 2021, the people of Myanmar have endured attacks using heavy weapons and aerial bombardments by the military, which has demonstrated a clear understanding of the destructive capabilities of these weapons. Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun emphasized the urgent need for member countries to halt any transfers of aircraft fuel, weapons, and ammunition to the Myanmar military in order to end the brutal oppression faced by the people of Myanmar by the illegally seized military regime.

Moreover, he reiterated that Myanmar does not support any threats made by nuclear-armed countries against nations that do not possess nuclear weapons. Any form of nuclear weapons use would constitute a violation of the UN treaty and could lead to severe humanitarian and environmental consequences. He stressed that the elimination of nuclear weapons is essential to avoid such threats and reaffirmed Myanmar’s commitment to fully adhering to the obligations related to nuclear disarmament.

The civilian government elected in Myanmar has signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). However, the illegal coup in 2021 has stalled the ratification process for the TPNW. Despite these challenges, Myanmar remains committed to upholding the objectives of a nuclear-free world and participating in all discussions aimed at establishing a secure and peaceful planet.
