Beth Van Schaack, the U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice, stated that the elections planned by the military council for the upcoming year will only serve to return power to the military without any freedom or fairness.
She emphasized that the elections being organized by the military council in Myanmar cannot be free or fair and will merely be a mechanism for reinstating military power.
“The election will only be one that returns power to the military. Considering the ongoing conflicts in every region of the country, it is even difficult to think about how to support and manage an election with justice,” Van Schaack remarked.
