Imprisoned Lawyer Daw Ywet Nu Aung Awarded 2024 Human Rights Prize; NUG Minister to Accept on Her Behalf

October 18, 2024.

Imprisoned lawyer Daw Ywet Nu Aung has been awarded the 2024 Human Rights Prize (XXVIII International Human Rights Award Ludovic Trarieux 2024) by the violent military junta.

The award was announced by the Italy-based organization Institut des droits de l’homme des avocats européens (IDHAE), recognizing Daw Ywet Nu Aung’s commitment to defending human rights and her active involvement in advocating for political prisoners.

Daw Ywet Nu Aung is currently held in Mandalay’s Obo Prison by the military junta. As she is unable to accept the award in person, it will be accepted on her behalf by U Aung Myo Min, the Union Minister for Human Rights from the National Unity Government (NUG).

It is known that the military junta sentenced Daw Ywet Nu Aung to 15 years in prison under Article 50 (a) in 2022 for her role as a lawyer for former members of the National League for Democracy (NLD) government.
