Military Shelling in Kyondoe Township Claims 1 Life and Destroys Homes

A military shelling in villages of Kyondoe Township, Karen State, has resulted in the death of one civilian and the destruction of homes, according to a statement from the KNU Central.

On October 18, at approximately 12:45 PM, troops from the (Sakha-12) under the (Kamar-231) battalion of the military targeted civilian residences in the township using heavy artillery, leading to explosions in the Taung Kya Ain and North Kya Ain villages.

Reports indicate that a 71-year-old resident, U Pho O, was killed when heavy artillery struck his village, while a 70-year-old, U Pho Thein, sustained injuries. Additionally, one civilian-owned home was destroyed in the shelling.

The KNU has condemned the military’s indiscriminate use of heavy weapons and airstrikes against innocent villages, asserting that these actions constitute grave human rights violations. As a result, innocent civilians have suffered injuries and fatalities, while their properties have been destroyed. The shelling has also damaged hospitals, schools, and religious buildings, the KNU Central stated.
