Deputy Police Chief Myint Aung was arrested by the military for commenting on the killing of civilians by military vehicles as “a violation of human rights.” In the Kyeemyindaing Township of Yangon Region, on December 5 last year, a military vehicle was used to attack youth protesting against the military regime. Myint Aung’s remarks, which were posted on social media, reportedly led to his arrest. Sources from the police reported that Deputy Chief Myint Aung and CID Training School Chief Deputy Chief Zaw Win exchanged comments about the incident, condemning the use of military vehicles against civilians. Both officials were arrested following their mutual comments. “Myint Aung also condemned the actions of the military vehicles and stated that it was a violation of human rights. Under his comment, Deputy Chief Zaw Win described those involved as inhumane and worse than animals,” said a police source. Deputy Chief Zaw Win was arrested on February 8 for violating police regulations and under Article 505(a). It is reported that Deputy Chief Myint Aung is facing charges under the same article.
