ASEAN Chair, Indonesian Foreign Minister Expresses Frustration Over Military’s Inaction on ASEAN Consensus, Pledges Engagement with All Stakeholders on Myanmar Crisis

The ASEAN Chair and Indonesian Foreign Minister, Retno L.P. Marsudi, expressed disappointment over the Myanmar military’s failure to implement ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus, vowing to engage with all relevant stakeholders to seek a solution to the Myanmar crisis. Retno made the statement on January 11, according to Indonesian media reports.

During a speech marking Indonesia’s assumption of the ASEAN chairmanship, Retno emphasized that Indonesia would not allow Myanmar’s crisis to hinder regional unity and progress. She reiterated that ASEAN must not become a hostage to the ongoing situation in Myanmar.

She further remarked that Indonesia will address Myanmar’s issue based on ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus and its fundamental principles. “Indonesia will engage with all relevant stakeholders. Only through such engagement can we pave the way for national dialogue and fully implement the consensus,” Retno said.
