The U.S. government has officially announced that President Trump has extended for another year the executive order designating Myanmar’s military coup as a threat to U.S. national security and foreign policy.
Following the February 1, 2021, military coup in Myanmar, President Biden initially issued Executive Order 14014 on February 10, 2021, recognizing the coup as a threat to U.S. national security and foreign policy. This order has been renewed annually, and the latest extension under President Trump continues its enforcement.
The coup, which overthrew the elected government, led to the arrests of government leaders, politicians, human rights defenders, and religious figures, as well as the suppression of the public’s democratic will. The military’s actions were deemed a direct threat to U.S. interests, leading to the executive order’s designation. This designation falls under the president’s authority and does not require congressional approval.
