Four civilians, including three children, were killed when the Myanmar military shelled a village near the Thai-Myanmar border in Tanintharyi Region’s Dawei District, following the fall of its military outpost, according to local residents and military sources.
The shelling occurred around 4:00 p.m. on July 8, after resistance forces seized the junta’s Thukha outpost located near the border. Troops from the junta’s Infantry Battalion 282, based in Kalein Aung, reportedly responded by firing heavy artillery shells into nearby areas.
Seven rounds of artillery were fired, and one shell landed in Tharyar Mone Village, located between Kalein Aung and Yebyu townships. The explosion killed four people, including three children, according to sources familiar with the incident.
Military sources suggested that the shelling may have been intended as a diversion to protect junta reinforcements heading toward the Nattein Mountain area, where allied resistance forces led by the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) had also launched attacks on other junta outposts around the same time.
