July 22, 2025

Political prisoner Ma Wut Yi Aung, who died from injuries sustained under torture by the military’s interrogation units and was denied proper medical care, will be cremated this morning at Yayway Cemetery, sources say.

She passed away inside Insein Prison on July 20. The prison department issued a release order on July 21 and returned her body to her family, allowing the cremation to take place today, July 22, at 11:00 a.m.

Ma Wut Yi Aung, a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Dagon University Students’ Union, suffered torture during military interrogation and was not granted adequate treatment while in prison, leading to her death.

She was arrested on September 14, 2021, in Kyauktada Township along with five other students for protesting against the military coup. During interrogation, she sustained serious head injuries and was later imprisoned without proper medical care.

The junta sentenced her to a total of seven years in prison—three years under Section 505(a) for incitement and four years under Section 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law.

Despite her deteriorating health, authorities failed to provide medical attention, and she died at age 25 from injuries believed to have resulted from torture.
