A six-year-old girl, Ma May Shin Thant, was killed and two other civilians injured when junta troops fired artillery shells into Mancho Village in Chaung-U Township, Sagaing Region, despite no fighting in the area, according to local residents.
The shelling occurred at around 9:27 a.m. on July 21, with four artillery rounds fired from junta positions in Chaung-U town. Two shells landed near the eastern side of the village along the Chaung-U–Pakokku road, while the other two struck the western side of the village.
“The girl was hit by shrapnel from a shell that exploded in the east of the village. It tore through her back and exited through her chest—she died instantly. Two others, 14-year-old Ma Nhin Pwint Phyu and Ma Thei Ei Phyu, sustained injuries from shell fragments,” said a local resident.
Ma May Shin Thant’s body was cremated later that morning at around 11:00 a.m., the resident added.
