Iin the town of Tantapin, Taungngu District, Bago Region, a drunken police officer named Htun Htun Win from the Zarapkyi police station shot and killed thirteen-year-old Maung Myo Myat Htun. Local residents reported to Yangon Modern News that the incident occurred last night when Maung Myo Myat Htun was shot twice while on his way to the kitchen to cook rice for his ailing mother. The shooting happened around 8:30 PM during a power outage.
According to eyewitness accounts, Maung Myo Myat Htun was preparing to cook when he was struck by bullets fired by Htun Htun Win, who was intoxicated. “The child was trying to prepare rice for his mother and was hit while he was eating a piece of chicken,” a local resident stated. “He was shot in the chest. Their home is located right next to the police station. It was dark because of the power cut and it was raining as well. The shooter was Htun Htun Win, who claimed he mistook the child for a figure and shot at him.” It was reported that the police station offered the family a compensation of 15 million kyats, but they rejected it.
Currently, Maung Myo Myat Htun’s body is being kept at home, and preparations for the funeral on May 13 are underway. However, there are reports that the police and military have threatened the family to keep the shooting incident quiet.
