Military Arbitrarily Arrests Two Citizens from Taungthukalay and Five from Thingangyun, Raising Concerns for Their Safety

July 15, 2022

In Yangon, on July 15, it was reported that the military arbitrarily arrested two citizens from Taungthukalay and five from Thingangyun on July 3 and 4, raising concerns for their safety as they have been sent to military detention.

On the night of July 3, around 11 PM, the military reportedly arrested U Aung Myint, Ko Nay Lin Htike, Ko Kyaw Thet Paing, Ko Khin Htoo Zaw, Ko Thet Soe U, and Ko Min Hkan Zaw from a building on Tapin Shwe Htee Road in the Kyaikasan neighborhood of Thingangyun township, with no explanation provided. They have since been transported to military detention, and communication with them has been cut off.

Similarly, on July 4, around 1 AM, Ko Nain Latt and Ma Aye Aye Min, who were living in an apartment on Inwa Road 20 in Taungthukalay township, were also arbitrarily arrested by the military after they forcibly entered their home, and communication with them has been lost.

A spokesperson from the Kawa Information Group stated, “It is confirmed that the detainees are from Kawa Township. We still don’t know why they were arrested. We have no information about where the seven detainees have been taken or which military detention facility they are held in. The military council often arrests individuals without cause, tortures them, and sometimes executes them. In Kawa, there was a recent case where Ko Zaw Nyan Lin was arrested without cause and killed by the military, so we are worried that the same fate may befall these people.”

Ko Zaw Nyan Lin from Metmauk village in Kawa township was reportedly arrested by the military on March 6, 2022, without reason, and died from torture the following day on March 7.
