U.S. Secretary of State Blinken Strongly Condemns Military’s Death Sentences for 4 Democracy Activists, Urges Respect for Myanmar People’s Aspirations

July 25, 2022

U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken has strongly condemned the military’s sentencing of democracy activists Ko Jin Mi, Ko Phyo Zeya Thaw, Ko Hla Myo Aung, and Ko Aung Thu Ya Zar, calling for respect for the aspirations of the Myanmar people who do not wish to live under military rule for even a single day.

In a statement, Blinken emphasized that the U.S. strongly rejects the military’s actions against these elected lawmakers and democracy activists, asserting that the military has shown complete disregard for human rights and the rule of law. Since seizing power in February 2021, the military has killed over 2,100 people and forced more than 700,000 to flee, including many innocent civilians, as well as members of civil society and journalists.

He noted that the military’s sentencing in a sham trial is an act to destroy democracy and that it cannot suppress the resolute spirit of the people of Myanmar. The United States stands with the people of Myanmar in their fight for freedom and democracy, urging the military to respect the democratic aspirations of the citizens who wish to live free from military control.
