The Junta Arrests Thinzar Wint Kyaw and Nan Mway San Under Section 33(a) of the Electronic Communications Law, Facing Seven Years of Hard Labor and Imprisonment

The military junta has arrested Thinzar Wint Kyaw and Nan Mway San under Section 33(a) of the Electronic Communications Law, a charge that carries a sentence of seven years of hard labor and imprisonment. The junta announced that the two were detained for allegedly distributing sexually explicit photos and videos, deemed inconsistent with Myanmar’s cultural values, to a U.S.-based website in exchange for payment.

Section 33(a) of the Electronic Communications Law is a punitive law that allows for a sentence of seven years of hard labor and imprisonment. Both Thinzar Wint Kyaw and Nan Mway San had previously participated in anti-military protests last year, and they are well-known models targeted by the junta and its supporters for their involvement in the resistance against the military regime.
