ASEAN Meetings to Block Myanmar Junta’s Participation if Five-Point Consensus is Not Implemented, Says Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn

August 6, 2022

Myanmar’s junta has failed to show any compliance or progress regarding the ASEAN five-point consensus, which has resulted in a decision to prevent the junta’s participation in all ASEAN meetings.

The Cambodian Foreign Minister, Prak Sokhonn, stated at a press conference today that the ASEAN will bar the participation of Myanmar’s junta in all ASEAN meetings if there is no progress on the implementation of the five-point consensus. He emphasized that the junta’s failure to adhere to these agreements will result in no access to any ASEAN meetings. However, he also noted that if the junta demonstrates compliance and improvement regarding the consensus, ASEAN may consider reevaluating its decision.
