Eleven Killed, Including Children, in Maungdaw Military Shelling; Urgent Blood Needed at Maungdaw Hospital

In Maungdaw, Rakhine State, at least 11 civilians, including children, were killed, and over 27 others were injured due to artillery shelling by the military council. Among the injured, at least five are in critical condition and urgently require blood donations, according to aid workers.

The shelling occurred around midday on November 16 in Gyeitchaung village, where the military’s artillery fire resulted in the reported fatalities and injuries. The wounded civilians are receiving treatment at the People’s Hospital in Maungdaw, where the need for urgent blood donations is pressing due to the severity of the injuries.

Gyeitchaung village is located north of Maungdaw, near military installations including the Kyein Chaung 24 Gate and Nakhka (7), where local residents reported continuous shelling by the military council’s forces.

Earlier in the day, the military also shelled Chaungtu village in Kyautaw Township, resulting in four male fatalities and injuries to two females from the 539 Infantry Battalion. Overall, on November 16, military shelling in Rakhine resulted in a total of 14 deaths and around 29 injuries.

In recent days, the military council has persistently shelled civilian areas, with casualties reported on November 10 in Ponnah Island (two fatalities), November 11 in Kyautaw Shwepyithit (six fatalities), November 12 in Maungdaw Kyaungtaung (two fatalities), and November 15 in Ponnah Island Kwan Mountain (one fatality).
