Civilian Woman Killed by Artillery Shelling in Pauk Taw Township, Sittwe

A civilian woman from Pauk Taw Township has been killed in an artillery attack launched by the military council forces stationed in Sittwe, Rakhine State. According to local sources, the incident took place on the evening of December 27, 2024, around 8:30 PM.

The artillery attack was fired by the military’s Infantry Division 344, stationed in Sittwe, from a position near the Naval Headquarters along the Point Canal Road. The shells were directed towards Pauk Taw Township, and one of the shells landed in the southern village of Taung Nyoh, killing an innocent civilian woman. The victim has been identified as Daw Myo Thein Wai, a woman over 50 years of age from the village.

According to local sources, “The artillery fired from Sittwe last night exploded in Taung Nyoh village in Pauk Taw Township. An innocent civilian woman lost her life. The military intentionally targeted the village, where civilians reside.” The artillery fire from the military’s divisions in Sittwe reportedly involved over 15 shells aimed at Pauk Taw, with the Kalatan River forming the dividing line between Sittwe and Pauk Taw Townships.

Besides the shell that killed Daw Myo Thein Wai, over six shells were fired in other areas of Pauk Taw Township, including the villages of Ngabyii Kwin and Thayettaw, local sources confirmed.
