Armed Forces Set Fire to Mukan Village, Leaving 300 Homes Damaged and Four Women Assaulted

June 15, 2022

The armed forces launched an attack on Mukan Village in the Depayin Township, causing approximately 300 homes to be burned down. Locals reported that four women were subjected to severe interrogation and abuse by the military during the assault.

Starting in the morning on June 14, the armed forces entered the village and set fire to homes, continuing their rampage throughout the night. It was reported that they established a presence in the village until the morning of June 15, when they withdrew.

A resident stated, “There are still fires burning in the village. I estimate that about 300 houses have been destroyed, but I cannot confirm the exact number yet. As we were trying to put out the fires, the military captured some villagers but later released them. The villagers now have no clothes, just the ones they were wearing. With the houses burned down, there’s no food left. Our village is large, but it feels like half of it has been affected. Many have lost their rice milling machines. We haven’t been able to take inventory yet. While we were putting out the fires, four young women were also interrogated and assaulted by the military.”

Currently, the villagers cannot return to their homes and are fleeing to safer areas. Only a few residents have been able to return to the village, while those who fled are in urgent need of food, clothing, and shelter.
