In a significant ruling at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), all objections raised by Myanmar’s military regime, including the claim that Gambia has no legal standing to prosecute for the genocide of the Rohingya people, were dismissed today.
The ruling, issued on July 22 in The Netherlands, addresses the military’s challenges regarding the genocide allegations and affirms that Gambia, having signed the International Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, has the right to bring charges against Myanmar regarding the existence or occurrence of genocide.
The ICJ decision underscores that, regardless of Myanmar’s military objections, the court recognizes its jurisdiction over the matter. Previously, the National League for Democracy (NLD) government, under Aung San Suu Kyi, led the defense against these genocide claims. Now, the military regime under Min Aung Hlaing, with the involvement of his appointed extremist Ko Ko Hlaing, is continuing to address the issues related to the allegations.
