In Melbourne, Australia, a commemoration event marking the 34th anniversary of the 8888 Uprising was held today, August 6, with the participation of Myanmar ethnic families. The event featured speeches from Hon Meng Heang Tak MP, a representative from the Victorian Parliament, and Mr. Christopher Lamb, the chairman of the Australia Myanmar Institute.
During his speech, MP Meng Heang Tak emphasized the shared struggle of Cambodia and Myanmar under authoritarian rule, stating, “Your fight is our fight.” Attendees noted the solidarity conveyed in his message as they gathered to honor the anniversary.
The event was coordinated by a young Chin woman, with a Karen youth leading songs of resistance. Various ethnic groups participated, with youth from the Lisu community performing revolutionary songs alongside representatives from different ethnic backgrounds. Dr. Yu Yu Chit, a prominent physician from the Melbourne-Myanmar community, recited poetry from the 8888 Uprising. A leader from the Myanmar Muslim community also spoke out against the atrocities of the military junta, highlighting the historical experiences of the 8888 Uprising, narrated by writer Min Din.
To conclude the event, Lisu youth led a performance of the song “The World Will Not Forget,” followed by a Karen woman expressing gratitude to the attendees, marking the end of the commemorative ceremony.
