August 22, 2022

In Hkanti, Shwebo District, Sagaing Region, a bomb attack carried out by the military near the Kyaw Sii Hein restaurant resulted in the death of one person and injuries to two others on August 22. Local residents reported that Maung Ye Win Htut, who was at the Shwe Yae Win tea shop, was killed in the explosion.

The Kyaw Sii Hein restaurant, which has been unoccupied for over a year due to frequent military and Pyu Saw Htee group presence, was the target of the bomb attack at around 7 a.m. today. It is reported that the explosion affected both the Kyaw Sii Hein restaurant and the nearby Shwe Yae Win tea shop.

During the incident, 26-year-old Maung Ye Win Htut succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital, and two other civilians were reported injured. A local resident described the bomb’s impact, stating, “The blast was powerful, and shrapnel was found over 3,000 feet away. Witnesses mentioned seeing both vendors and shoppers in the area at the time. The military seems to be attempting to create confusion between the civilians and the People’s Defense Forces (PDF) with such tactics, establishing a deliberate strategy to incite division.”

Residents noted that after local defense forces staged protests, the military had escalated its bombing operations in the area.
