Child and Elderly Woman Injured as Military Fires on Villages During Vehicle Convoy in Bago

October 12, 2022

In Bago Region, during the passage of military vehicle convoys, local villagers reported that military forces opened fire on the villages along the roadside, resulting in injuries to a child and an elderly woman, as well as numerous other civilians. This incident occurred on the morning of October 12 around 10 AM, as military trucks traveling towards Bago shot indiscriminately at shops and villages along the road. It was reported that a child was struck in the leg, and an elderly woman was also injured, with many other civilians sustaining injuries.

One local resident commented, ‘While driving, the military shot directly at the shops and houses along the road. Many people were injured. The villages in that area are quite peaceful, with no ongoing conflicts or revolutionary activities. It’s incomprehensible why they would shoot like that. The road is known as the Highway. It’s part of the route to Mawlamyine-Bago. It takes about 15 minutes to reach from Zathapyin village. People used this road frequently, whether traveling from Mawlamyine to Bago or vice versa. After hearing this news, no one dares to use that road anymore. This instills fear in the villagers who were previously living quietly,’ said one resident.

Currently, villagers are stockpiling supplies and preparing to flee in the event of further clashes, indicating heightened anxiety among the local population.
