The Myanmar military has reportedly arrested several National League for Democracy (NLD) officials, including former representatives U Thun Thun and U Win Win, during a violent raid in the towns of Pyin Oo Lwin and Minbu. The military’s actions raise serious concerns for the safety of those detained, especially U Win Win’s three young children, including a three-year-old.
On January 8 at approximately 5 a.m., the junta detained U Thun Thun, an NLD lawmaker from Pyin Oo Lwin, U Win Win from Minbu, and other party members, including U Pho Kyaw from Salin and CDM teacher U Myint Aye. The arrests occurred in Shartaw village, with the military reportedly using extreme force, leaving some faces injured and detaining bystanders.
Among those arrested were U Win Win’s wife, Daw Toe Toe Wai, and their children: 17-year-old Maung Than Zin Win, 13-year-old Ma Nhaung Yati Win, and 3-year-old Maung Lapye Win. Sources indicate that U Thun Thun has been missing since he was last seen with his wife, Daw Kay Thi Mo, and they are believed to have been arrested by the military last year, possibly as a part of an ongoing crackdown on political dissent.
