The military launched airstrikes on Kokang City in Shan State, dropping seven 500-pound bombs in four waves, resulting in the deaths of five civilians and injuries to four others, according to the TNLA. The attack occurred without any active battles in the area, and in addition to the casualties, more than five homes and several shops were destroyed by fire.
At approximately 3:05 PM, 3:11 PM, 3:20 PM, and 3:30 PM on August 5, 2024, the military launched the airstrikes, dropping seven bombs in four different waves, targeting the center of Kokang City, including a crowded marketplace and residential areas. Three male motorcyclists and two civilians were killed instantly, and four others sustained injuries in the attack.
In addition to the human casualties, more than five homes in the city and several shops in the main market were destroyed by the fires caused by the bombs. PSLF/TNLA’s fire brigade responded swiftly to extinguish the flames. The military had previously conducted similar airstrikes on July 27, 2024, in Theinni Town, killing seven civilians, and has continued sporadic bombings in Laukkai.
