NLD Deputy Chair and Mandalay Chief Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung Passes Away Today at 3 AM

Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, the Deputy Chair of the National League for Democracy (NLD) and Chief Minister of Mandalay, has passed away in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Mandalay General Hospital at 3 AM today, October 7, as confirmed by NLD sources in Mandalay.

Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, who was suffering from leukemia, was sentenced to 29 years in prison following the military coup on February 1, 2021. His health deteriorated while in prison, leading to his final hospitalization in the ICU at Mandalay General Hospital.

Before his passing, it was reported that the military junta issued a decree on October 6 granting him a temporary release from his sentence, which was read to him at the hospital.

Dr. Zaw Myint Maung was elected as a representative for the National League for Democracy in the 1990 party-based general elections for the Amarapura Township. He was arrested by the military on November 22, 1990, and subsequently sentenced to 19 years in prison, being released on February 21, 2009.

In the 2012 by-elections, he was elected as a representative for the People’s Assembly from the Kyaukpadaung Township and later became the Chief Minister of Mandalay Region after being elected to represent Amarapura Township in the 2015 general elections.

On the day of the 2021 coup, he was detained along with his family, and the military imposed various charges against him, resulting in a 29-year prison sentence.
