Six civilians, including two children aged two years and an infant, were killed on November 27 when the Myanmar military’s Battalion 336, based in Pekon Township, Southern Shan State, fired mortar shells into Kone Pyaw Village. The attack also injured three other civilians and destroyed four homes, according to a representative from Pekon PDF (1006 Battalion).
The shelling, which began at around 3 p.m., occurred despite the absence of any active fighting in the area. The military launched approximately 15 shells, one of which struck a single household, killing multiple members of the same extended family. Civilians in the area endured sustained mortar fire from the late afternoon into the following morning, leaving survivors in fear and mourning.
“Around 15 mortar rounds were fired. They struck a single location, affecting one extended family and killing everyone there. The shelling continued into the morning, causing more injuries to civilians,” said a Pekon PDF representative. The attack also caused significant property damage, with at least four houses destroyed.
The incident highlights ongoing civilian casualties and destruction of homes due to indiscriminate attacks by the military in conflict-affected areas, intensifying calls for accountability and justice for victims.
