Military Airstrikes and Artillery Shelling in Rakhine and Sitwe Leave Civilians Dead and Injured

On the night of December 19, military aircraft from the junta conducted airstrikes on Sittwe, Rakhine State, resulting in injuries to three civilians. The bombings, which occurred after 11:00 PM, targeted residential areas in Sittwe’s Ward 1, Ward 4, and several locations including the Buranthone Road and Land Registration Office.

The attacks, carried out by two fighter jets, caused significant damage, including the destruction of two houses in Ward 1. The injured civilians were identified as 55-year-old Daw Tin Tin Cho, 63-year-old U Ye Aung, and 85-year-old Daw Aung Myint. Additionally, the Land Registration Office was also reported to have been damaged in the bombing.

Similarly, on the evening of December 17, a military artillery unit fired shells at Ponnakyun Township in the vicinity of the island of Ponnar, which is under control of the Arakan Army (AA). One of the shells exploded in Paddetha village, resulting in the death of 58-year-old U Maung Yar Zin from Sittwe’s Kyantaung village, who had been displaced to the area. Four other civilians were injured in the incident.
