Nearly 100 Civilians Killed in December, Reported by AAPP

From December 1 to December 31, 2023, the military junta killed 95 civilians across Myanmar, according to a report released by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) on January 7, 2024. Among the casualties were 35 women, 59 men, and one individual identifying as LGBTQ+, with all identities confirmed by the organization.

The report stated that Mandalay Region recorded the highest number of fatalities with 23 deaths, followed by Bago Region with 17. Among the nearly 100 casualties, 14 were children under the age of 18.

Out of the total deaths, 45 individuals were killed in airstrikes, while 30 died as a result of heavy artillery attacks.

On December 29, junta forces stationed between Myit Chay and Kamma towns in Pakokku Township, Magway Region, shelled residential areas in Myit Chay, resulting in the deaths of five civilians.

According to AAPP’s records as of January 7, 2024, over 6,124 pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed since the military coup began.
