Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun told the United Nations that a horrible airstrike by the Myanmar military on a school in Depayin Township, Sagaing Region, had badly killed 20 students and 2 female teachers.
He raised the issue during the Commission on Sustainable Development convened on May 12 at the UN Headquarters in New York City, United States.
The attack occurred on the morning of May 12, when a military aircraft bombed the school in Ohtaintwin village, killing two female teachers and approximately 20 children, with many others badly injured. Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun noted that this was not an isolated incident, but one of many in Sagaing Region, which was also one of the worst-hit areas during the 7.7 magnitude earthquake more than a month ago.
He stated that the military’s daily, indiscriminate airstrikes and bombing campaigns are causing horrible harm to civilians and extensive destruction of infrastructure. These attacks are severely damaging essential institutions responsible for the goals of sustainable development—particularly schools and hospitals.
In his remarks, Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun called on the international community to stop supporting the military junta, which continues to inflict devastation on civilian populations through systematic and deliberate violence.
