NLD Reports Nearly 5,000 Civilians Killed Post-Coup, Including 2,000 Women and Children

The National League for Democracy (NLD) reported on September 27 that nearly 5,000 civilians have been killed since the military coup, including approximately 2,000 women and children. The report highlighted that by September 15, the military had murdered this number of civilians, and the data was presented during the 36th anniversary celebration of the formation of the National Democratic Force.

The report indicated that among the 4,868 civilians unlawfully arrested and tortured by the military, there were two representatives from the NLD, 107 party members, 395 children, and 711 women. The junta’s unlawful seizure of civilian homes and properties resulted in the confiscation of belongings from 833 civilians, with a total of 1,014 losses reported.

Furthermore, the military’s actions included the confiscation of properties belonging to 199 representatives of the National Democratic Force and 250 party members, with a total of 449 confiscated properties resulting in 563 losses. The junta has targeted members and offices of the National Democratic Force, leading to repeated destruction of their offices, including three times at the central office in Yangon, 15 times at state and regional offices, 113 times at district and township offices, and 28 times at village offices, totaling 165 instances of destruction.

Currently, there are 18,174 individuals unlawfully detained by the military, including 145 representatives of the National Democratic Force and 2,248 party members, along with 259 children and 2,153 women who are also detained. The report details that the junta’s heinous acts include the arbitrary killing and torture of innocent civilians, and the destruction of their homes.

As of September 15, 2024, among the 4,868 civilians unlawfully arrested and tortured, there were two representatives from the National Democratic Force, 107 party members, 395 children, and 711 women. Additionally, the report stated that 73,029 homes have been burned, with repeated arson incidents occurring in some regions, totaling 1,810 instances of arson. Furthermore, armed attacks involving heavy and small weapons resulted in the deaths of 699 innocent civilians and injuries to 1,793 individuals.

The report notes that military airstrikes totaling 282 incidents have led to the deaths of 728 civilians and injuries to 642, emphasizing that these attacks have specifically targeted non-military areas, including villages, schools, hospitals, places of worship, and refugee camps, resulting in mass casualties among civilians, including children.
