In downtown Yangon, a protest movement was organized today to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the 8888 Uprising against the military regime. Despite heavy security measures by the junta, demonstrators took to prominent locations in the city, including Sule Pagoda, Bo Cho Market, Inya Lake, and Hledan, displaying umbrellas marked with ‘8’ to symbolize their resistance against military rule.
The collective action reflects the spirit of the original 8888 Uprising, during which people from all walks of life united to oppose the military regime. This ongoing struggle against military oppression, which reignited with the February 2021 coup, marks over 70 years of resistance and unrest.
The protest in Yangon called on the populace to unite in the fight to completely eradicate the fascist military, urging citizens to join the struggle for liberation.
