September 9, 2022

Myanmar nationals in Tokyo, Japan, staged a protest on September 9, calling for the continued appointment of U Kyaw Moe Tun as the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. The demonstration was led by representatives from Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG) in Japan, including U Saw Bla Hla Thein, and was supported by members of the NUG Japan office, who marched alongside the public to show solidarity.

A petition signed by 54 Myanmar advocacy groups in Japan was also submitted to UN officials by young activists leading the pro-democracy movement. They emphasized that the UN should respect the will of the Myanmar people. Further coordinated protests are planned in eight major cities across Japan on September 11, as demonstrators continue to demand U Kyaw Moe Tun’s retention as UN ambassador and urge the global body to act in accordance with the aspirations of Myanmar’s citizens.
