In Mandalay, the military has arrested flower vendors, buyers, and sellers, claiming they participated in the flower protest for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday. Local residents reported that at least ten individuals have been detained.
On June 19, the day marking Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s 79th birthday, the public actively participated in the flower protest. However, reports indicate that the military junta has carried out arrests during the demonstration. Around 8 AM today, military personnel entered a tea shop near the intersection of 31st and 81st streets in Chan Aye Thar San Township, detaining a flower vendor and three women from the Shwe Yamin tea shop, as well as one individual holding a flower, two women taking photos with flowers on social media, and others, bringing the total number of detainees to at least ten.
“Both flower buyers and sellers are being arrested. One vendor selling flowers was also detained. As of now, there are about ten known arrests,” said an active young member of the Mandalay Youth Association.
