The G7 nations, including the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan, have strongly condemned the death sentences issued by the brutal Myanmar military regime against four pro-democracy activists, including Ko Jinmi, Ko Phyo Zeyar Thaw, Ko Aung Thura Zaw, and Ko Hla Myo Aung.
In a joint statement, foreign ministers and senior representatives expressed deep concern over these unprecedented actions, highlighting that such repressive measures are a blatant violation of human rights and further demonstrate the regime’s disregard for the democratic aspirations of the Myanmar people. The condemned individuals were recognized as key figures in the pro-democracy movement following the illegitimate power seizure in February 2021.
G7 countries reiterated their strong rejection of the military regime and expressed condolences to the families of those affected by the regime’s violence, including arbitrary killings, detentions, and widespread repression. They called for an end to these atrocities and urged the military regime to refrain from imposing further death sentences and arbitrary detentions.
The G7 urged the military to restore democracy and facilitate a political dialogue involving all stakeholders, including ethnic armed groups, to achieve a peaceful resolution. The statement emphasized the importance of continued support for ASEAN’s efforts and called for the military to fully implement the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus.
Moreover, it highlighted the necessity for a comprehensive and inclusive dialogue among all pro-democracy forces and reinforced support for the United Nations’ initiatives to ensure effective cooperation between the ASEAN special envoy and the UN Secretary-General’s special envoy.
