The UK government has announced its support for sending the Myanmar military to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the atrocities committed against Rohingya and Myanmar citizens. This declaration was made by Jesse Norman MP, the Minister of State for the Americas, during a parliamentary session where he responded to questions posed by Rushanara Ali MP regarding the situation in Myanmar.
“The UK has been clear that there must be accountability for the atrocities committed in Myanmar. We strongly condemn the ongoing human rights violations by the Myanmar military and the historic atrocities against the Rohingya. The UK will support efforts to bring perpetrators to justice before the ICC,” stated Jesse Norman MP.
The Burma Campaign UK, an organization advocating for Myanmar, welcomed the UK government’s announcement, affirming its support for transferring the Myanmar military to the ICC for prosecution. This announcement comes after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken declared on August 25 that the U.S. would also support sending the Myanmar military to the ICC for the genocide and atrocities committed against the people of Myanmar and the Rohingya.
